Storage Tips

Tip #1

Store items you'll need most often at the front of the unit, and create a center aisle for access to all items.

Tip #2

Furniture with drawers can be used to store pictures, nick-knacks, china, silverware, small items, etc. Wrap them in tablecloths, towels or blankets to prevent breakage.

Tip #3

Do not place boxes directly on concrete floors, but use pallets or skids to allow air flow around and under items.

Tip #4

If you're storing tables and other furniture, save space by remove legs and store tabletops and sofas on end. Always place a protective material under items set on concrete.

Tip #5

Old photographs tend to curl over time. To keep them flat, place them between two pieces of cardboard and tape them together.

Tip #6

Common sense and state law determines what may be stored. You alone control access to your storage space therefore never store firearms, illicit drugs or drug paraphernalia, live animals, perishables, liquids, explosives, flammable liquids and fuels, toxic materials, or other items that need a controlled environment.

Tip #7

Use empty trash cans to store shovels, hoses, hoes and rakes.

Tip #8

Mattresses should be covered and stored flat on level surfaces. If you must stand mattresses on their side, stand them up straight. They may tend to bend out of shape and become lumpy.

Tip #9

Use protective covers and treat wood surfaces before storing.

Tip #10

When storing metal items, to retard rust, wipe all metal surfaces with a rag containing a few drops of machine oil.

Tip #11

Pack blankets, draperies, and dress clothes on the hanger in a wardrobe box.

Tip #12

Always use high quality locks on your unit. Locks are available for sale-just ask our site manager for a recommendation.

Tip #13

Always use climate control for humidity sensitive items.

Tip #14

Whenever possible, place dressers and tables top-to-top to save space.

Tip #15

List contents of boxes on all four sides; number the boxes, seal them with tape. Make an inventory of your stored items and keep in a safe place at home or in a safe deposit box.

Tip #16

Stack lighter boxes on top of heavier boxes. Use uniform size boxes for easy stacking. Be sure your boxes are strong enough to hold 25 lbs. to 30 lbs. (It is best not to put to much in each box).

Tip #17

Dishes and glasses should be wrapped in paper and packed in sturdy boxes. Stack them on top.

Tip #18

Pictures and mirrors should be wrapped in cardboard, marked "FRAGILE" and stacked on end.

Tip #19

Large appliances make excellent "packing cases" for blankets, towels, tablecloths, and clothes.

Tip #20

Cover stuffed furniture with plastic sheets, cardboard or blankets to protect against dust.

Tip #21

Do not place heavy or sharp objects on top of upholstered furniture.

Tip #22

Rent the smallest amount of space you need and pack the space full.
